There are several spectacular and breathtaking waterfalls in Mauritius and all of them are unique. In this blog post I will cover the must see waterfalls that you don’t want to miss!
1. Chamarel Waterfall
Chamarel waterfall is probably the most famous fall in Mauritius for a reason. This 83 high, powerful waterfall is surrounded by amazing lush nature. It is easy to observe its beauty from two different viewpoints that are located at the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth reserve.
The road to the waterfall itself is scenic and once you get to the viewpoint you will see a spectacular single-drop waterfall that drops in the pool surrounded by a tropical forest.
If you want to see the waterfall from the bottom there is also a possibility to take a guide that takes you to the base of the waterfall. There you can take a swim under the fall and enjoy a beautiful 3 hour trek.
In order to see the waterfalls you will need to purchase a ticket at the entrance of the reserve. The entry ticket includes the Chamarel waterfall, tortoise park, and geopark with 7 coloured earth.
2. Tamarind falls
If you enjoy hiking as much as I do you should definitely go on this waterfall hike! Tamarind falls are also known as 7 cascades or Tamarin falls and they are located in the village of Henrietta. During the hike you will be able to explore the flora and fauna around the falls and swim under the waterfalls.
I did the hike with a guide and he showed us 12 stunning waterfalls during our full-day hike. The whole experience was amazing since it included a lot of climbing and exploring viewpoints.
3. River Noire falls
These falls can be seen from the Black River Gorges National Park viewpoint. The viewpoint provides a great look over the park and you can see several waterfalls in the distance. The River Noire falls can be seen on the right side of the view.
If you follow the trail that leads to the forest on the right side of the viewpoint you will be able to walk to the river that turns into this stunning waterfall. I actually went and walked in the water to get to the top of the waterfall and let me tell you – the view was absolutely amazing. I was very curious to see the waterfall from the top and that was the reason to follow the river.
4. Alexandra falls
If you are on your way to the Black River Gorges National park viewpoint, I’d recommend to visit the Alexandra Falls viewpoint that is located at one of the main entrances of the Black River Gorges National Park. There you will find a wooden viewing platform that you can climb up. However if you want to get closer look of the falls you will have to go on a hike drought the woods. The hiking trail will also start from the viewpoint area.
5. Rochester falls
These falls are easy to reach but the road to get there is really bumpy and it might be a bit hard to find a parking near to the falls. We left our car on the road but we were a bit scared that other cars might bump into it. The falls are beautiful and you can also spot some monkeys at the spot. At these falls you don’t have to hike, but the road is slippery and you should watch your step if you are wearing flip flops!
You should also be aware that at the Rochester falls there is this “tourist guide” that seems to be a friendly local man that wants to interact with you but he actually demands a lot of money for showing you places if you go and follow him or if you take anything from him. So, you should just politely do the sightseeing on your own.
